There was plenty to learn at Greater Dayton REIA’s Rehab Show and Tell – held during the association’s Third Wednesday meeting for June (6/21/17). Attendees had the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge about products and services from Greater Dayton REIA’s commercial members. During the event, the meeting room was divided into five stations – where attendees could pose questions and discuss answers. The stations included the following: The Carpet Store, Sherwin Williams, BC Warner Inspections, and National Tenant Network. The fifth station, hosted by longtime Greater Dayton REIA member Brian Quinlan, was devoted to Brian’s collection of unusual tools.

Here are some of the questions presenters answered during the evening:

-- How can I choose the best floor covering for rehabs and rentals?
-- When is it important to use a better grade of grout?
-- How can I choose a quality paint brush and roller cover?
-- How can thermal imaging help identify water leaks, electrical hot spots and other hidden defects in a house I’m thinking of buying?
-- How can a third-party service help me screen tenants and manage the paperwork in rental applications?
-- Brian, what the heck is that tool you just brought out of the tool bucket?

Attendees got a lot of answers about a variety of topics before the evening was out.
One question must have been on everyone’s mind: What’s that odd-looking folding device in the left front corner of the room? The one that appeared to be about three feet high, eight feet long and four feet wide?

Brian provided the answer. The strange-looking rig is called a Centipede Portable Work System. What is it? It’s a lightweight device you can carry in a duffel bag. It opens to serve as a sturdy support for a makeshift workbench – if you have a plywood board to place on top of it.  It’s the kind of tool that could be very useful in housing rehab projects, he said.
