President’s Monthly Message
GDREIA President’s Message – August 2011
Congratulations, GDREIA, for winning recognition from the National Real Estate Investors Association! As I’ve mentioned in this space before, GDREIA’s Board believes it’s very important to keep lines of communication open with government – from township trustees to members of Congress. Now National REIA has recognized GDREIA’s efforts in this area with an Award of Excellence for governmental affairs. It was one of two awards given to GDREIA by National REIA, following a competition involving dozens of local REIAs around the country. National REIA also recognized GDREIA with and Award of Excellence for print communication, including the monthly newsletter you’re reading right now.
Congratulations to everyone who helped GDREIA gain recognition from our national association!
The awards were given at the annual National REIA leadership retreat in Nashville, TN June 23-26. I was one of six GDREIA delegates to attend the meeting. Some 150 representatives from nearly 30 local REIAs around the nation were also on hand. Local REIAs competed in eight categories for awards.
As great as it is to return home with awards, it’s even better to return with knowledge gained from classes and networking. There were many opportunities to explore better ways to do things – from how to choose our programs and speakers to new ways to bring money to our Association. One way GDREIA will accomplish the latter is by becoming a Charter Member of National REIA – which will allow GDREIA to share rebates from major retailers who are also part of the program. GDREIA’s Board has decided to pursue Charter Membership – which means you get bigger discounts when you buy things you need to run your real estate business from selected retailers – and GDREIA collects rebates. It’s a win for everyone!
Merchants participating in the discount program include The Home Depot, Sherwin-Williams and Roto-Rooter, among many others. You’ll learn more about the retailers offering discounts through the Charter Membership program in the months ahead.
Check them out. It’s a great way to help yourself and your Association.
We can also help ourselves by continuing to keep in touch with the people who represent us in government – locally, in Columbus and in Washington. National REIA is focused on issues affecting us at the federal level and the Ohio REIA watches lawmakers in Columbus. It’s up to us to keep an eye on what happens in our own communities. That’s one of the lessons we heard from our fellow delegates in Nashville. We need to stay in touch with government representatives and invite them to stop at our meetings from time to time. Then when a legislative issue comes up, they’re more likely to be receptive to our point of view. So please look up your government representatives and get in touch. This is vital to survival of our businesses in these tough economic times.
All in all, it was a great leadership retreat, and those of us who attended returned with a lot of great ideas to help make GDREIA even better in the years ahead. Thanks to the GDREIA delegates for taking their valuable time to attend: John Grosmann, Darrin Carey, Connie DiNino, Erica Greene, Kathy & Mike Frye. We look forward to putting some great ideas into action in the months ahead!
